About Tijn Wybenga

Started out as a young, talented jazz pianist, now grown into one of the most exciting Dutch composers of current times. Composer, conductor and artistic director Tijn Wybenga (1993) grew up in Hoorn and played piano from the age of 7. At the age of 15 he started at the Junior Jazz College at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he started his Bachelor of Composition at 18 years old. Twelve years on and he has become one of the most successful young Dutch composers. For example, he won the 2018 Rogier van Otterloo Award for best young composer/arranger and regularly writes/arranges for orchestras such as the Metropole Orchestra and the ‘Nederlands Blazers Ensemble’. The main project of this jack-of-all-trades is his AM.OK (Amsterdam Modern Orchestra); Hard beats, a lot of fast notes and intense compositions characterize this group with which Tijn has already performed at festivals such as NN North Sea Jazz Festival, Transition and So What’s Next. In 2019 and 2020, Tijn and AM.OK nestled themselves at our BIMHUIS Production House.

Artist in Residence

In his trajectory as Artist in Residence, Tijn developed BRAINTEASER: an album consisting of schematic improvisations that reflect the characters of all the musicians in AM.OK. These improvisations were recorded, sampled and arranged into new compositions, which the musicians then played live. The result is a dazzling work that fuses, intertwines and re-inspires. The album received rave reviews in the national and international press and won the Deutscher Jazz Preis for best international debut album of the year.
