under his birth name christian scott he has reached a wide audience with innovative music. under his new honorary title chief adjuah he connects all kinds of rhythms: west african, first nation and caribbean, as well as rock, hip-hop, trap and 808-beats. with beautifully designed instruments such as adjuah trumpet, chief adjuah’s bow and sirenette he creates a sound that is embedded in the music, drawing comparisons to legends such as jon hassell and miles davis. chief xian atunde adjuah conquered important festivals such as north sea jazz and transition, and reached the top of the downbeat critics polls, as a trumpeter and as a composer. he collaborated with big pop and rock stars such as prince, jill scott and thom yorke, and with influential rappers such as mos def, boogie and vic mensa. his roots are in the jazz of new orleans: as a teenager he played in the band of his uncle donald harrison jr., with which he made his dutch live debut in 2003 at the bimhuis. ‘the new orleans trumpeter and composer continues to stretch the language of jazz, further embracing electronics and an increasingly broad approach to rhythm’ (pitchfork). after the concert, dj lucas benjamin (a.o. wicked jazz sounds, steppin' into tomorrow) is playing at the café.

like our venue, the willem breuker kollektief saw the light of day fifty years ago. the legendary orchestra, which was active until 2012, will now give its first performance in renewed form. most of today’s members have played under the leadership of the orchestra’s namesake and composer, who died in 2010. out of the ten musicians, three have been members from the start. the concert will be introduced by duos featuring musicians who have a special connection to breukers' music, alternated with a performance of “www.brandhout.nl” for a string octet consisting of members of the dudok kwartet and the mondriaan kwartet. during his life, willem breuker continued to invigorate dutch music life with new impulses. as a composer, saxophonist and clarinetist he united divergent styles in theatrical, cabaret-like performances for as wide an audience as possible. he traveled the globe for thirty-five years with his own ensemble, willem breuker kollektief; he ran a record company, bv haast; and for decades he organized the festival klap op de vuurpijl for jazz, improvised, and contemporary classical music. the willem breuker kollektief received global acclaim for its groundbreaking nature, uniting jazz and improvisation with european influences from theatre, film and classical music, among others. alongside willem breuker’s original compositions, the kollektief presented remarkable renditions of the music of kurt weill and george gershwin. many performances and albums were created with special guests, such as vera beths, gisela may, greetje kauffeld, loes luca, and freek de jonge.

for this ade concert we will remove seats and transform our concert hall into a club for a mix of jazz, hip-hop, house and neo-soul. ghost-note performing live is a dazzling experience with no less than eight masters of funk, spearheaded by drummer robert ‘sput’ searight and percussionist nate werth. together they are at the heart of the successful fusion formation snarky puppy. in ghost-note they collaborate with members from the bands of prince, erykah badu, herbie hancock, kendrick lamar. they expand the boundaries of funk, with influences from afrobeat, hip-hop and psychedelia. after forming in 2015, ghost-note has taken the world by storm. the group’s two studio albums—2018’s swagism and 2015’s fortified—have earned critical acclaim and popular success around the globe, now they return with mustard n’ onions, which proves that the band represents a growing family of musicians. the original mission remains the same: ghost-note is pushing funk music into the future, building on the pioneering foundations laid out by the likes of james brown and sly & the family stone.

for the friday night of amsterdam dance event, bimhuis and the rest is noise present a special collaboration with diaspora radio: a nightly program that explores the boundaries between tradition and experimentation in electronic music; between dance floor and concert hall. for this special concert we will take the chairs out, to create an intimate dance floor. 22:00-23:00 dj shahmaran drawing inspiration from the kurdish tale of shahmaran, a half-snake, half-woman with an uncompromising spirit, rotterdam-based dj shahmaran fearlessly brings together diverse strands of bass-driven and leftfield music to soundtrack narratives of escape and hope. 23:00-00:00 abadir & hogir abadir & hogir fuse traditional percussion and contemporary electronic music in an unprecedented way. with his virtuosity on percussion instruments, hogir, born in tatvan, turkey, brings a wealth of cultural influences and rhythmic diversity to their performances. abadir, a berlin-based producer and sound designer from cairo, adds his experimental electronics inspired by memories of religious rituals and cultural artefacts. his most recent album ison, released on svbkvlt, reinterprets his childhood memories of coptic, syrian, maronite, greek orthodox and catholic services and choirs. together, they create an immersive experience filled with traditional and experimental sounds, resulting in an intense, almost surreal musical journey. 00:30-01:15 karima el fillali karima el fillali (b. 1987) is a dutch-moroccan singer and songwriter known for her enchanting voice and deeply moving live performances. el fillali gives traditional arabic music a 21st-century update. she uses ancient poetry by sufi mystics such as mansur al-hallaj and ibn arabi, about love, light and darkness, joy and sorrow. at the same time, her music is heavily influenced by western classical music, hip-hop and art-pop. for her ade performance, she will dive into the music of the night together with stijn van beeck's spatial electronics, jamil al asadi's qanun and marcos baggiani's drums and percussion. 01:15-02:45 dj shahmaran

greetje bijma & oceanic it's a remarkable collaboration between leftfield techno dj and producer oceanic and jazz vocal artist greetje bijma; a sparkling hybrid at the intersection of improvisation and electronics. greetje bijma can rightfully be called a legend: in 1990, she was the first woman to win the buma boy edgar prize (the most prestigious dutch award for jazz and improvised music), and she has collaborated with the likes of jasper van ’t hof, willem breuker, and louis andriessen. since the 1980s, this free jazz singer has been an integral part of the dutch jazz scene. when pieter jansen of the record label yeyeh met bijma, he was instantly starstruck. he asked her if she would be interested in collaborating with a young electronic music producer, and her answer was an immediate and enthusiastic yes. enter oceanic. this rising star in the dutch electronic underground is known for his mechanical rhythms, minimalist melodies, and vibrant electronics. although they come from completely different generations, they had an instant musical connection. expect mind-expanding vocals, danceable rhythms, and breathtaking beats. luxe (live) this london dj brings a unique blend of classical music and cutting-edge electronic beats like you’ve never heard before. with her background in flute, piano, and vocals, she brings deep musicality to every set, giving her tracks a refreshing twist in the club scene. whether you see her shining at major festivals like waterworks and field day or elsewhere, luxe’s performances are always a journey through a fascinating world of sound. experience her energetic and boundary-pushing music live at amsterdam dance event at the bimhuis. ade opens with five arts & culture opening concerts with leading figures in art forms from all fields. this concert is selected to be one of the five opening concerts of ade 2024.  

to celebrate their 50th anniversary, bimhuis is partnering  with various venues and breeding grounds in amsterdam in their series bimhuis loves. together with these partners in jazz, the bimhuis will organize five exciting concerts during five wednesdays in october at the following special locations: de roode bioscoop, zaal100, zojazzstage, splendor and sexyland world. the entire program is now online. location: zojazzstage a duet of the highest order is what you can expect at this concert by vernon chatlein and ramón valle. vernon chatlein is a percussionist and composer with an extensive color palette. originally from curaçao, he spent two years in cuba to study music. he then moved to the netherlands for further studies with the godfather of curaçao jazz, randal corsen. ramón valle is a piano giant. since his debut album almost thirty years ago, the cuban jazz pianist and his quirky cocktail of genres have become a regular on the international stage. he just released his latest album, flashes from holland, with jesse van ruller amongst others.

tuesday night means it is time for a new tuesday jam! still led by saxophonist and winner of the boy edgar prize 2019 jasper blom, tuesday jam is the place where musicians of all ages and levels meet and inspire each other. with the celebrated jazz department of the conservatory of amsterdam only a couple of hundred meters away from our bimhuis, there is no lack of impressive talent on stage at anytime. add some spontanious visits of world-class musicians like esperanza spalding, seamus blake and dick oatts, and you got the perfect mix. in short, this is the session where every jazzmusician and jazzlover should be. entrance is free, reservations are not necessary.

as the co-founder of phronesis, jasper høiby gave a new impulse to the jazz piano trio. with 3elements he continues this journey. with a melodic and bold sound of visceral and kinetic musical interplay and featuring a revolving line-up of some of europe’s best young talent, his latest release like water features piano prodigy chaerin im from south korea and jamie peet, a uniquely eclectic drummer from the netherlands. when it comes to double bass, jasper høiby is one of the greats of british jazz. over the past decade, the danish-born player has become renowned for his fearlessly expressive sound, charismatic stage presence and distinct compositional prowess. aside from his international success with phronesis, he has formed fellow creatures and planet b. his music transcends genres, combining jazz, folk and rock influences with cutting edge improvisation.

the conservatorium van amsterdam is full of top talent. so is the cva large ensemble, which will make its appearance tonight. the ensemble will collaborate with a special guest , vocalist michael mayo. the american vocalist is the definition of a super talent, effortlessly switching between the most diverse styles and skills, from neo-soul to bop and from crooning to beatboxing. already at his first performance in our hall, with ben wendel's supergroup high heart, mayo blew everyone away with his unprecedented vocal control and solo improvisations. his latest album fly, featuring guest appearances by nate smith, shai maestro and others, will be released on october 4.

for every one of its performances, the group حمد (ahmed] selects a composition by ahmed abdul-malik, pioneer at crossing jazz with eastern music. this composition serves as a basis for an improvisation that can have a different character every time, often with the emphasis on rhythm and groove. the core is a melody, which could lead to intensely physical and propulsive ensemble playing, as heard on the group’s recent album wood blues on the astral spirits label. the band received critical acclaim in, among others, the wire, pitchfork and downbeat. حمد (ahmed] is a platform for four musicians from london, berlin and paris, who all follow their own paths in improvised music. at each performance of the band they reconnect with renewed energy. the pioneering bassist from new york, who played with legends such as art blakey and coleman hawkins, experimented with traditional eastern instruments and explored eastern music on albums such as jazz sahara and east meets west.

fenix's atmospheric music takes you on an imaginative trip. catchy melodies and irresistible grooves are playfully alternated by this electronic-acoustic band. together they play a colorful landscape of music created in the moment. no performance sounds the same, as this band loves to improvise. what can be predicted: their music makes you move! in the family concert series groove beest you will discover why some music makes you want to tap your foot to the beat or jump up start dancing. together with mc groove beest and the band members you will feel the groove. sitting still is not an option; so jump, dance and clap along and unleash your inner beast. get in the mood with this video.

with group of friends, yoràn vroom presents his own work from his albums ‘across a spectrum’ (2021) and ‘a forgotten story’ (2023). the music of ‘across a spectrum’ is mainly about the richness of caribbean culture, which the musicians give their own take on with collective improvisation as the common denominator. the second album ‘a forgotten story’, is the live album of vrooms' reflex project, the concert series of our bimhuis productions department where musicians present their take on the current zeitgeist. the virtuoso drummer called together family and friends to reflect on the covid years. vroom took the perspective of ‘a history student from the next century, relying on backward sources’. together with four percussionists and two dancers, among others, he told a story of dizzying repetition, hope and losing it. now vroom presents a combination of both albums with his group of friends, five virtuoso musicians that vroom loves to play with. special guest is mehdi nassouli, the internationally acclaimed moroccan singer and player of the stringed instrument guembri.

in the bimhuis productions series reflex we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. the curator of this edition is pianist marta warelis. she formed a group with well-known improvising musicians from various cities including amsterdam and chicago. they depart from silence, elements of folk and deep grooves, towards freedom and transformation. in this new band, marta warelis places her piano and synthesizer opposite the clarinets of karen ng and ab baars and the trumpet of ben lamar gay, which appears as a singing voice. the fundament is laid by bassist ingebrigt håker flaten and drummer frank rosaly. marta warelis has a strong preference for improvisation and experiment in all kinds of styles. she continuously aims for instant composing on the basis of new sounds and influences. the polish-born improviser explores the timbral possibilities of the acoustic piano on the one hand, and the electronic synthesizer on the other. since 2019 she’s part of the amsterdam-based improv collective doek.

electro-acoustic duo stemeseder - lillinger explore the boundaries of contemporary music with their new album antumbra. using plucked, percussive and electronic instruments, and influences from sample culture and folk music, they create a rich sound world. antumbra builds on previous works such as penumbra and umbra, integrating historic acoustic instruments into electronic constructions. this post-genre work explores meta-beats, multidimensional structures and collage techniques, depicting both utopia and dystopia. recorded in various locations including new york and athens, the album offers a reflection on the present and projections of possible futures. berlinde deman is the regular tuba player of flat earth society orchestra and has worked with various bands and projects from the jazz, theatre and classical worlds, including dave douglas, ab baars trio and jef neve. she did residencies in sweden, luxembourg, the netherlands and belgium. fascinated by the tuba's precursor, the serpent, she explores the boundaries of peace and tranquillity in her solo programme with this rare 16th-century instrument and loops/electronics. her melancholic and unique sound brought her together with artists such as graindelavoix and hans beckers, and in her solo work she creates a world far away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday.

in this double concert, we present young promising improvisers who will showcase new work. clarinetist and composer federico calcagno is known as one of the most innovative musicians in the european jazz and improvised music scene. he has received prestigious awards such as the "keep an eye the records 2023" and the "premio internazionale giorgio gaslini 2020". with his latest album, "mundus inversus" (habitable records, 2024), he presents a contemporary jazz ensemble with eight international musicians. inspired by the dutch painter hieronymus bosch and the tarot archetype of the hanged man, the music ranges from delicate passages to intense outbursts, where melodies and harmonies come together in special ways. the music of singer vera morais and saxophonist hristo goleminov emerges from the fusion of poetry and improvisation. their debut album "consider the plums", based on poems by william carlos williams, received international acclaim and was listed in the top 20 albums of 2022 by jazz.pt (portugal). for their concert at our venue, they will bring new material - original lyrics and instrumental pieces - showing their development after three years of touring europe.

in celebration of the 50th anniversary of our hall and the 40th anniversary of zaal100, guitarist corrie van binsbergen presents a mini-version of the illustrious brokken festival. for years van binsbergen organized brokken festivals in both our hall and zaal100 with enormous success, giving countless musicians the chance to be heard in their own idiosyncratic way.  a festival that opens the ears and widens the view. characteristic is the great variety of styles, genres and ages. she presents in this mini-edition: prĄd | drive by sofinka prĄd | drive project is an initiative of polish pianist, vocalist and composer zofia 'sofinka'imiela. the project is based on experimenting with and exploring traditional polish music, with seven voices and percussion. mirna attia, silva de waard, iolaysa braga tavares, francisca snip, louise linkenbach, corine borsje, zofia sofinka imiela alan purves whether obscure instruments like boomwackers, homemade instruments like the brimbram or a rubber pig, in the hands of alan purves everything is music. a fixture in the history of the many brokken festivals, and therefore indispensable at this special edition. alan purves percussion, toys hemels en vergeefs lyrical inspiration combined with absurdism. it doesn't seem possible. but it is possible in the poetry of toon tellegen. and it fits very well with the compositions and improvisations of the musicians. text and music merge, reinforce each other, sometimes contrast and form a lucid whole. a door opens, children are customers, standing on their toes, and the world in its dust jacket comes out of its twilight, asks honey sweetly, “what did you wish for?

in october 2024, thirteen years have passed since piet noordijk died. from rotterdam pubs to large halls with the metropole orchestra, he captivated with his effervescent saxophone playing, making him one of the tastemakers of dutch jazz. three outstanding alto saxophonists – benjamin herman, sean payne and miguel valente – pay tribute to their famous colleague, accompanied by pianist francesca tandoi, double bassist matheus nicolaiewsky and drummer sander smeets during this fourth edition of the european alto festival. with the festival, benjamin herman wants to bring great alto saxophonists from other european countries to dutch audiences. ‘there are so many great european musicians who are invisible to jazz lovers in nearby countries. i really enjoy being able to bring these crazy saxophonists the the netherlands. they play so amazing, you don’t know what you’re hearing.’ says benjamin herman. young brit sean payne is a much sought-after saxophonist in the uk, who released his debut album in 2023. at the age of 13, he already entered the final of the bbc young jazz musician of the year, and has since performed as a sideman and/or bandleader at venues such as ronnie scott's, vortex and the royal albert hall. saxophonist miguel valente studied at the conservatorium van amsterdam and has performed on our stage on several occasions, including the marmoucha orchestra, m.a.s.t and nausyqa, who have just released their debut album.

if anything fits better into our legacy series, it is arnold dooyeweerd's iconic workshop. for more than 45 years (!),double bassist dooyeweerd,  sent beginning and advanced adventurous musicians into the deep end with a gentle push. no chord diagrams or fixed melodies, but spontaneous improvisations were at the heart of this workshop where young and old musicians performed together for years. tonight and especially for our 50th anniversary, dooyeweerd will give a retrospective of his legendary workshop and there will be performances by loyal participants from the last years of the workshop. also performing will be musicians who joined the workshop as young talents and grew into renowned musicians in the form of eric boeren, wiek hijmans, wilbert de joode, hans hasebos and bart van helsdingen.

the famous icp orchestra returns to our stage once again. in 1967, together with pianist/composer misha mengelberg, han bennink stood at the foundations of this orchestra, which is currently known as one of the most creative groups in modern jazz. mengelberg passed away in 2017, but his compositions are kept alive by a basically steady line-up. mengelberg’s compositions are the starting point, but no icp concert is ever the same. the musicians of the icp orchestra have learned to deal with each other’s quirks, when it comes to timing and intonation. they know how to confuse each other, to bend or derail the music while performing. because of that, the music is full of surprises, unexpected turns, flexible grace and weird eruptions. “…the instant composers pool orchestra, from amsterdam, ….they are scholars and physical comedians, critics and joy-spreaders.” – the new york times

misha mengelberg’s songs are often funny and moving at the same time, with catchy melodies and crazy tones. misha was the main composer of the eccentric icp orchestra, which has been around for half a century. drummer han bennink is still part of the gang and is known all over the world. he can drum on literally anything. the songs will be performed by a very special guest who has sung many operas, soprano claron mcfadden. everyone, young and old, can sing along!

‘new cuban groove’ is what they call it themselves, cuban music of the year 2024 that exudes joy and energy. the members of el comité have each earned an excellent reputation in both jazz and cuban music. as a band they cannot be categorized and their virtuosity allows them to steer clear from clichés. on their new album carrousel we hear influences from latin jazz and thelonious monk alongside classical melodies and covers by, among others, rosalía and the weeknd. ‘the name el comité is actually a joke,’ said drummer rodney barreto in an interview with dutch magazine slagwerkkrant. ‘when you speak of a “comité” in cuba, one immediately thinks of government institutions such as comité de defensa de la revolución, so people tend to laugh when they hear our name.’ co-founder barreto played with cuban legends such as omara portuondo and chucho valdés. the other members also have impressive careers full of prestigious names such as buena vista social club, irakere, david murray, esperanza spalding, and richard bona. after the concert the music will continue with salsa panorama, a cuban salsa party at our café with an incredible view, where everybody is invited to dance.

in the past fifty years our venue has been an axis an international network of musicians who prioritize freedom, improvisation and independence. oscar jan hoogland celebrates this with twelve international top players who epitomize the spirit of the bimhuis. in a variety of line-ups they celebrate the bimhuis-sound, such as misha mengelberg’s mischievous swing, senegalese vocals, the chicago scene, crackling electronics, sean bergin’s south african kwelas, free improvisation alongside challenging composition, the wayward the ex, sultry ethiopian melodies, latin grooves and jazz by grandmasters such as monk, ellington and sun ra. oscar jan hoogland is a leading figure in the amsterdam improv scene. as misha mengelberg’s last student, he has strong ties to the history that is related to fifty years of bimhuis. especially for this concert he formed a supergroup in which he plays piano and electric clavichord.

new york saxophonist oded tzur has ushered in a new era for his instrument by giving it a whole new voice, one that is described by the guardian as a “unique tenor sax whisper”. often recalled by the artist as a ten year leap of faith, this complete reimagining of the instrument has established him as a torchbearer of spiritual jazz. his music is more than a conversation, states the new york city jazz record: “it is an interactive prayer”. my prophet, the third album of tzur’s quartet on ecm records, anoints music as the epicenter of a spiritual discipline: a prophet that tells us not about the future, but about who we really are. through a myth-like suite, the bandleader tells the story of an all-powerful deity, experiencing everything from sobering murmurs to cathartic, unabashed ecstasy.

to think outside the box: that has always been a motto to live by for saxophonist hans dulfer. musically, dulfer has always been at the forefront. he played psychedelic free jazz and created the first dutch world music. he was the first jazz musician to collaborate with house djs, and he achieved pop star status in japan with the unique blend of heavy guitars, beats and sax with the record big boy. he was also at the cradle of the dutch jazz scene, organising legendary concerts and co-founding our venue. in our anniversary month, a performance by this 'tough tenor' simply has to happen, 50 years after his first concert at the bimhuis. to this day, dulfer prefers to play live, at the most diverse venues and with relentless energy. as always, he brings a true all-star band including guitarist jerôme hol and drummer hans eijkenaar. dulfer has informed us that he likes to see a full house, so you know what to do.

on 1 october it will be exactly 50 years ago that the bimhuis opened. this month we will look back and ahead into the future. on the opening night we welcome two internationally recognized saxophone players. first we welcome dutch pride tineke postma, who will present her new band, followed by the new star from the motherland of jazz, james brandon lewis, who will share the stage with drum genius chad taylor. a grandiose start of a packed anniversary month! lyrical, melodic and full of groove and emotion: this is how tineke postma’s style is being described. she achieved acclaim across the pond as well, collaborating with the legends who inspired her, herbie hancock and wayne shorter, and with famous peers such as esperanza spalding and terri lyne carrington. as a band leader she released two albums on the international jazz label editions records, freya and aria. especially for this opening concert she will present her new band with star players from all over europe. james brandon lewis has already received the highest praise from his role model sonny rollins, and has proved himself to be a perfect addition to the tenor saxophone hall of fame. albert ayler’s spirituality and john coltrane’s cosmic aspirations have inspired him, but the new york-based saxophonist mainly stays grounded in the present. he leads a trio, a quartet, and he made an album on impulse! records with the messthetics, featuring ex-members of fugazi. he’s also part of the latest band of trumpet icon dave douglas. especially for our anniversary, james brandon lewis will arrive from the us together with drummer chad taylor, known from chicago underground duo. presentatie door kika sprangers en benjamin herman. ‘a dutch saxophonist of fluid expressivity, modern to the core’ (new york times over tineke postma). ‘the lyricism expressed is engaging, and postma’s saxophone technique dazzles’ (downbeat).

in october, we will celebrate our 50th anniversary, kicking it off with a grand opening concert called home by former 'composer of the fatherland' martin fondse and his ensemble bigbim50. this special opening is a tribute to the founders, inspirers and pioneers of the bimhuis, and a celebration of all the music that has sounded here over the past half century. music will be heard all over the building, from the balconies, from the lifts and from the stairs. especially for this occasion, martin fondse composed the composition home, performed by a special large line-up under the name bigbim50. this line-up, consisting of 15 horns and a rhythm section, represents a cross-section of the (jazz) musicians who have taken the stage in recent years. bigbim50 is both a marching band, a jazz orchestra, a chamber ensemble and a powerful improvisational instrument, featuring wood, saxophones, brass, percussion, piano and guitar. according to fondse, the bimhuis is home to many musicians and a wide and passionate audience. it is a place full of memories, new experiences and groundbreaking music. home embodies this spirit and opens the anniversary month with a powerful and multifaceted musical spectacle. practical info schedule: 19:00 bar open 19:30 start concert location: atrium of muziekgebouw, admission is free.
