Steven Kamperman – City Maps

Adventurous trip through an imaginary city, in music and moving images.

This concert has been changed into a matinee concert due to the latest COVID measures (26 of November). You can find here what the latest COVID measures mean in terms of your visit to the BIMHUIS.

For City Maps, clarinetist and drummer Steven Kamperman wrote a series of compositions that form a portrait of a city. Titles like Grand Boulevard, Cathedral, Dance Hall, Central Station and The Bridge can all be found on city maps. The ensemble takes the audience on a journey through an imaginary place, with colorful and poetic visuals by young filmmaker Henrietta Müller.

City Maps is a project full of contrasts. Influences vary widely from modern dance to Gregorian chant, and from swing jazz to contemporary composed music. All these roots come together in a compositional journey and a shared approach to intense improvisation. The result is a sound of abrasive beauty, in which old and new merge naturally, as they do in the cities around us.
