Sanem Kalfa

Cellist, composer and remarkable vocalist.

About Sanem Kalfa

Vocalist, cellist and composer Sanem Kalfa was born in Trabzon, a city on the Black Sea coast in northeastern Turkey. This region often returns in her work, sometimes literally in an album title (Blacksea Songs, with George Dumitriu and Joachim Badenhorst, 2020), sometimes as a feeling of melancholy and connection with the mountainous nature. She won 1st Prize for the Shure Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition, chaired by Quincy Jones, and in 2023 she was ‘Artist in Focus’ at North Sea Round Town.

REFLEX

Sanem Kalfa received an invitation from the BIMHUIS to write new work for REFLEX , a concert series in which musicians present their view on the spirit of the times. At the beginning of 2022, Kalfa was inspired by the push and pull of invisible hands during the lockdowns. She presented the result Miraculous Layers during the concert on March 4 at the BIMHUIS for the public, a magical moment after all the lockdowns. A live album from this evening has been released on BIMHUIS Records. Listen to the album digitally, on CD or LP.

REFLEX is supported by Ammodo.
