This season, trumpeter Peter Evans appears on our stage no fewer than three times. On 28 August he played with his trio ft. Jim Black & Petter Eldh, and on 29 January he presents his programme Being & Becoming. Tonight he performs solo, with guitarist Terrie Ex as the opening act.

Since 2002, Peter Evans has been redefining what a solo trumpet performance can be. He is one of the pioneers of the genre and earned early acclaim with More is More (2006, psi). His command of the instrument is total: with breath, valves and embouchure he shapes a sonic world that ranges from piercing overtones to microtonal textures. He has been compared to a tightrope walker, balancing between imaginative compositions and extraordinary playing.

Every set is a living composition that adapts to the acoustics of the hall, the energy of the audience and the space itself. Evans brings together jazz, new music and experimentation, only to let go of every framework entirely. His solo work has taken him to stages on five continents, from the Venice Biennale to clubs in Tokyo and São Paulo. Albums such as Lifeblood, The Veil and Into the Silence capture part of it, but its essence comes to life on stage.

The evening opens with a solo set by Terrie Ex. He took up the guitar when he co-founded The Ex in 1979, simply because nobody else wanted to play the instrument. With the band he has played more than two thousand concerts in 45 countries, but from the very start he also improvised freely, with Han Bennink, Ab Baars, Ken Vandermark, Paal Nilssen-Love and Kaja Draksler, among others. Peter Evans also features on his long list of musical partners. Since 2000, his label TERP has released his own improvisation projects as well as African music, from Getatchew Mekuria to Konono No.1. In 2025 he released the solo LP Flaps.
