This season, trumpeter Peter Evans appears on our stage no fewer than three times. On 28 August he plays with his trio ft. Jim Black & Petter Eldh, and on 14 October as a solo trumpeter. Tonight he performs with his project Being & Becoming.

Being & Becoming brings together four musicians reshaping what contemporary improvisation can sound like: alongside Evans are vibraphonist Joel Ross, bassist Nick Jozwiak and, since spring 2025, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, one of the most respected figures in creative music today. This is not genre fusion or stylistic collage but invention in real time: music that feels composed as it unfolds, yet structurally inevitable.

The band shapes space rather than density. Each piece builds its own architecture, moving from spare motifs to spiralling collective climaxes, with Evans’ trumpet cutting through, at times lyrical, at times incendiary. Their album Ars Ludicra, recorded at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio, marks a new step in the group’s development.
