In Marie Galante, actress Loes Luca tells the story of the title character from the 1931 novel by French playwright Jacques Deval. A young Parisian woman is abducted by a sailor and left behind on a Caribbean island, where she tries to survive in hostile surroundings with a single desire: to return to France. Luca performs the story in Dutch and sings the French chansons Kurt Weill wrote in 1934 for the stage adaptation of Deval’s book, accompanied by the musicians of Teleruptor, among them former members of the Willem Breuker Kollektief.

Don’t be surprised if other repertoire turns up along the way: alongside Weill there are arrangements of music by David Bowie, Tony Williams, Archie Shepp, John Cale, Jerry Goldsmith and Willem Breuker. All of it arranged by Bernard Hunnekink, Rob Verdurmen and Bob Zimmerman.

Loes Luca vocals, David Kweksilber reeds, Frans Vermeerssen reeds, Gerard Bouwhuis piano, Arjen Gorter bass, Rob Verdurmen drums, Martijn Grootendorst video
