Impro FocusBIMHUIS & Space is the Place

Interlinie is a series of events aimed at mixing and matching musicians from various scenes for improvisation, experimental music and jazz. For Interlinie #3 they will travel together through Europe in two formations: Mother Tongue from Amsterdam and the new ensemble led by percussionist Bex Burch from Berlin. Interlinie is organized by Space Is the Place, also known for the Interplanetary and Intergalactic Nights at the BIMHUIS.

As Yet Untitled: Bex Burch – Esther Coorevits – Stan Maris – James McClure
British-born percussionist Bex Burch emphasises space, repetition and aspects of chaos in an ongoing approach she describes as ‘messy minimalism’. She custom built her own percussion instrument based on the xylophone and the gyil from Ghana. For Interlinie #3 she will present her new composition in a remarkable line-up: trumpeter James McClure, violinist Esther Coorevits and accordionist Stan Maris. As Yet Untitled unfolds through a dialogue between natural sounds, instruments, and voices from the audience.

Mother Tongue
A Senegalese Griot singer, a Dutch improviser and a Puerto Rican jazz drummer find each other in Mother Tongue. Mola Sylla grew up the tradition of griots, the West African storytellers. His vocals and playing on m’bira and xalam distinguish themselves from recognized conventions in surprising ways. Drummer Frank Rosaly responds to that from his background in experimental rock, Chicago jazz and Latin-American music. Oscar Jan Hoogland plays his self-made clavichord, joining 17th century principles with 220 volts of electricity, plus all kinds of household tools.
