WhyNot x BIMHUIS

This special edition of WhyNot x BIMHUIS is dedicated to Becoming Mountain, the new performance-installation by artists Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Zalán Szakács in collaboration with the band AWICHAS. Inspired by Phujllay, an ancestral Andean ritual celebrating the seasonal harvest of sound, the artists explore the connections between sound, textiles, movement and performance. Cyclical sonorities become graphic scores, textile patterns, choreography and hypnotic rhythms akin to contemporary club music.

Rooted in Andean worldviews in which humans, nature and unseen forces are profoundly interdependent, Becoming Mountain invites us to rethink how we create, communicate and relate to the ecosystems we are part of.

Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti continues to  captivate our stage with her performances in bands such as Mestizx, Ruidoscuro and Superinca & the Galactic Green. She once again fuses vocals, dance, percussion and electronics in the six-piece AWICHAS. As a performer and installation artist, Zalán Szakács creates immersive interactive atmospheres that challenge perception. AWICHAS has turned heads with rapturous performances at festivals such as Le Guess Who?, Rewire and North Sea Jazz. Founded by Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and experimental musician Jochem van Tol, the psych folk/electronica formation includes drummer Frank Rosaly, Nihiloxica-percussionist Jacob Maskell-Key, composer Lida Brouskari, and artist/vocalist Julia Werner.
