Freedom of speech, freedom of worship. Freedom from want, freedom from fear: these four freedoms were articulated in 1941 by American president Roosevelt. On his new album Four Freedoms, Dave Douglas shows that music can reflect these freedoms. Among his compositions for this album, Douglas included special dedications to his current band members: pianist Marta Warelis, who made name in Amsterdam, the imaginative bassist Nick Dunston, and master drummer Joey Baron.
Dave Douglas has become a household name in the music world since the 1980s. He recorded hundreds of albums, collaborating with jazz legends such as Horace Silver and pop heroes such as Tom Waits. An important chapter in his career was the groundbreaking Masada ensemble led by avant-garde composer John Zorn. He also recorded a well-received album together with influential Dutch pianist/composer Misha Mengelberg, in a quartet featuring drummer Han Bennink.
‘Full of artistic freshness and a subtle, nearly surreal wit, the music hovers between form and abstraction’ (JazzTrail).
