Norwegian tuba player and composer Daniel Herskedal treats his instrument as a fully fledged melodic voice and keeps pushing its limits further. His music brings together the spirit of jazz and the compositional craft of classical music. He has written commissioned work for the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Royal Norwegian Navy Band, among others, and collaborated with the Russian Patriarchate Choir of Moscow. His collaboration with Marja Mortensson won a Norwegian Grammy in 2019, followed in 2021 by an Ambies Award for the music to the podcast 9/12.

With the albums Slow Eastbound Train, The Roc and Voyage, Herskedal built a cinematic sound world in which space and simplicity matter more than effect. On his album A Single Sunbeam he layers tuba and bass trumpet into broad, ambient textures, extending the work of the earlier Call for Winter. At our venue he brings this music in trio form, with pianist Eyolf Dale and percussionist Helge Andreas Norbakken.

‘An impressive work from a singular musician, the tuba has never sounded this cool’ (All About Jazz).
