Drummer Tom Skinner is one of the current innovators of British jazz, alongside Shabaka Hutchings, with whom he has played several times on our stage in the band Sons of Kemet. Additionally, he has celebrated success with the experimental rock band The Smile featuring Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead. Composing his new album Kaleidoscopic Dreams, Skinner mainly followed his instinct. Live he will improvise with the same band as on the album.
Intuition and feel are important factors for Tom Skinner when it comes to composing his own music. Kaleidoscopic Dreams was written mostly on guitar, an instrument that is secondary to him. This lead to a series of very personal songs about memories and family, heroes and friends new and old. Alongside major talents from the London jazz scene, the album also features illustrious guests such as Meshell Ndegeocello en Adrian Utley (Portishead).
‘Skinner and band navigate uncharted waters with sass and skill’ (Mojo).
Chelsea Carmichael sax/flute, Robert Stillman sax, Kareem Dayes cello, Tom Herbet double bass, Jonathan Geyevu (Yaffra) vocals/piano, Tom Skinner drums
