Dave Rempis, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Frank Rosaly have played together since 2006, when Flaten spent three years in Chicago. The trio built its repertoire in clubs like the Velvet Lounge, the Hungry Brain, the Hideout and Elastic. Those years of playing together produced an ease in which written material and entirely free improvisation flow into one another.
On the double CD Orbital they set two ways of working side by side. The first disc revolves around compositions that stay subordinate to whatever the group does with them on the spot. The second, recorded in Antwerp, is free improvisation from the very first note and features the remarkable pianist Marta Warelis as a guest. Warelis has worked with Dave Douglas, Ab Baars and Carlos Zingaro among others, and was a linchpin of the Amsterdam improvised music scene for years before moving to Berlin in 2024. Now the four of them visit our stage with improvisation of the highest order.
“Music that feels both grounded and unbounded, a testament to a trio whose orbit may have widened.” (AllAboutJazz)
