Communication and dialogue are important principles to the Luís Vicente Trio, a vital force in contemporary Portuguese jazz. Departing from Vicente’s compositions, the trio explores new roads inspired by their surroundings, company and atmosphere. Now the trio will be expanded with two likeminded players from New York, who have already made their marks on our stage: saxophonist Tony Malaby, who played here with the likes of William Parker en Tim Berne, and pianist Leo Genovese, who was active here in the bands of Esperanza Spalding.

The Luís Vicente Trio has earned international acclaim with their albums Chanting In The Name Of and Come Down Here. On these recordings, the players reveal their adventurous spirit, emotional depth and their ability to discover new sounds. Vicente’s open melodies and the imaginative playing of bassist Gonçalo Almeida and drummer Pedro Melo Alves continue to yield surprising results. On Come Down Here they explore various influences, from Don Cherry’s Old and New Dreams Quartet to the music of the Afro-Brazilian martial arts form capoeira.

‘Highlighting freshness through freedom, the trio on Chanting the Name of stays away from the conventional tropes’ (Ken Waxman of Jazzword on the Luís Vicente Trio).

Luis Vicente trumpet, Tony Malaby tenor sax, Leo Genovese piano, Gonçalo Almeida double bass, Pedro Melo Alves drums
