Connection and conciliation are important themes in No Man’s Land, the program that Kika Sprangers previously presented at Grachtenfestival and that can now be heard in a new version with the string players of the renowned ensemble Pynarello. With her tender sound, sparkling tonal language and compelling compositions, the saxophonist is one of the most important new voices in Dutch jazz.
Kika’s playing is about conjoining vulnerability and power. A vision that is expressed with a preference for unorthodox line-ups and a tension between symphonic and silent parts. Her first love is jazz, but her inspiration also lies with twentieth century composers such as Maurice Ravel and Arvo Pärt, as can be heard in her work with Pynarello.
‘Enchantingly beautiful. Her style automatically draws you in and is deceptively simple, but never unpredictable. It’s jazz that starts silent and lifts you up to symphonic heights’ (NRC).
