Late Show: Joost Lijbaart: Free
Joost Lijbaart drums / percussion, Kika Sprangers alto / soprano sax, Wolfert Brederode
A dream has come true for percussionist and improviser Joost Lijbaart: his first solo album. Besides the drums, this all-rounder also plays all other instruments itself on ‘Free’. You can hear a lot of tuned percussion, such as glockenspiel, tube bells and vibraphone, but also more African and Asian percussion, including odaiko drums, anklung and balafon.
As in many of his compositions, Lijbaart draws inspiration for this album from all parts of the world and their musical traditions. At the same time, ‘Free’ is a journey “inside”, and the album reflects on more personal experiences such as being alone, masculinity, development and finding one’s own self in turbulent times.
Joost Lijbaart has been a permanent member of the Yuri Honing Trio since 1996 and also plays in numerous own projects, such as a duo with pianist Wolfert Brederode and a trio with vocalist Sanne Rambags and guitarist Bram Stadhouders. Their latest album Trinity has been nominated for the Edison Jazz Vocal National.
For the album presentation he invited Wolfert Brederode and Kika Sprangers to accompany him.
