Drummer Joey Baron is one of the most sought-after names in American avant-garde jazz. In groups led by John Zorn — Masada, Naked City —, alongside Bill Frisell and Marc Copland, and in collaboration with legends such as Lee Konitz and Jim Hall, he draws melodic nuances from his drumkit that reach far beyond purely rhythmic support. Percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky is known for her untamed, boundary-pushing approach; together with Baron she previously recorded the album Now You Hear Me for Intakt Records.
For this concert they join forces with Japanese guitarist Otomo Yoshihide. With his radical band Ground Zero he experimented with noise, samples, turntables and prepared guitars; in the Tokyo club scene he also brought together countless musicians and sound artists in a way that recalls what John Zorn did in New York. Together the three present Lavish Joy, a programme that probes the terrain between precision and noise, between the meticulous and the raw.
