Joel Ross is one of the most distinctive voices in jazz of his generation. The vibraphonist and composer previously topped the DownBeat Critics Poll in the Rising Star vibraphone category, and built his reputation across a series of Blue Note albums, each with its own identity: from the compositional complexity of KingMaker (2019) and Who Are You? (2020) to the more melodic terrain of nublues (2024), on which pieces such as Equinox by John Coltrane and Evidence by Thelonious Monk sit alongside new material.
His fifth Blue Note album, Gospel Music, is his most personal work to date: a musical exploration of faith, hope and love, drawing on biblical stories for inspiration. Ross returns to the intricate writing of his earlier records while preserving the directness that made nublues so immediate. He brings his band Good Vibes in a sextet configuration: Josh Johnson on alto saxophone, Maria Grand on tenor saxophone, Jeremy Corren on piano, Kanoa Mendenhall on bass and Jeremy Dutton on drums.
