In his native Canada, Jeremy Ledbetter is known as a true piano sensation: lightning-fast, energetic and with a complex yet accessible style. It has earned him comparisons to the great virtuosos of jazz piano from the past half century. With his main trio he has won a Juno Award, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for the album Gravity. The trio featuring bassist Rich Brown, from Steve Coleman and Five Elements, and drummer Larnell Lewis, from Snarky Puppy, will now make their debut on our stage.
Originally trained as a classical pianist, Jeremy Ledbetter studied jazz before embarking on over a decade of travel where he studied, played, and produced music all over Latin America and the Caribbean. In Trinidad and Tobago, he became musical director to calypso icon David Rudder. In Brazil he played with Hermeto Pascoal and in Venezuela and Cuba he also collaborated with many greats. Jeremy has produced albums for latin, calypso, jazz, soca, and salsa artists. All these influences are condensed in his trio.
‘Ledbetter’s playing brings to mind flashes of Corea, Hiromi and even Monty Alexander, such is his ability to fuse many disparate styles into his own richly flavoured personal brew – the power of Brown and Lewis bringing both balance and bounce to the group sound’ (Jazzwise).
