On their upcoming album 木漏れ日 / Komorebi, Japanese for sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees, guitarist Jakob Bro, saxophonist Joe Lovano and percussionist Midori Takada reveal their most lyrical and cinematic side. Lovano alternates tenor sax with flute and tárogató, Bro brings his distinctive guitar sound and Takada plays marimba, piano and gongs. Together they create music about wind, water, the changing of the seasons and transience.
Joe Lovano is a living jazz legend. The Grammy winner has topped the DownBeat polls countless times and is as much at home in bebop as in free improvisation. Bro, with whom he has worked since 2021, has released 25 albums as a bandleader and played with Tomasz Stańko, Lee Konitz and Charles Lloyd.
Midori Takada left her classical career behind to study percussion from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and Indonesian gamelan. Her album Through the Looking Glass (1983) is regarded as a key work of minimal music, akin to the work of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Its reissue led to sold-out solo concerts at venues including London’s Barbican and The Kitchen in New York.
‘Jakob Bro creates magical music, impossible to categorize or capture’ (Downbeat).
