The ICP Orchestra has long been a byword for creative freedom. In 1967, Han Bennink and pianist and composer Misha Mengelberg founded this ensemble, which remains one of the most inventive groups in modern jazz. Mengelberg passed away in 2017, but his compositions are kept very much alive by the largely unchanged lineup. His oeuvre is the starting point, but no two ICP concerts sound the same.

The musicians of the ICP Orchestra learned to work with the idiosyncrasies of their fellow players’ timing and intonation, how to throw their colleagues off balance, how to bend or undermine the music mid-performance. The result is full of surprises, unexpected turns, supple grace and strange eruptions.

‘The Instant Composers Pool Orchestra, from Amsterdam… they are scholars and physical comedians, critics and joy-spreaders.’ (The New York Times)

Thomas Heberer trumpet, Joost Buis trombone, Ab Baars clarinet/tenor sax, Tobias Delius clarinet/tenor sax, Michael Moore clarinet/alto sax, Mary Oliver violin/viola, Harald Austbø cello, Guus Janssen piano, Ernst Glerum double bass, Han Bennink drums
