Saxophone, piano and percussion form the sound of Hupata, alongside a wonky, wobbly, rickety, going hog wild wagon filled with toys, which transform and take shapes of birds, elephants, camels, taking you for a journey. The three band members Ada Rava, Marta Warelis and Yung-Tuan Ku obviously have a shared sense of humor and imagination. In their improvisations, strong melodies and noise can be interchanged with quiet passages, reflecting breathing cycles and the tides of the sea.
Argentinean saxophonist Ada Rave, Polish pianist Marta Warelis and Taiwanese percussionist Yung-Tuan Ku met each other in the playground of vibrant Amsterdam improvised scene, and have been working together since October 2016. Last summer their album Microclimates appeared on the American label Astral Spirits. The music evokes images, much like the titles on the album: Dragon Tiger Buffalo, Urban Heat Island, and House in the Tall Grass, for example.
The show opens with a solo by another improviser pur sang: Wilbert de Joode. Vooraf een solo van nog zo’n improvisator pur sang: Wilbert de Joode. De Joode is acclaimed as a powerful free spirit who continues to explore and take risks. In 2016 he won the prestigious Buma Boy Edgar Prize.
