With her calm, exceptional voice Gretchen Parlato makes each composition her own, whether it’s a jazz standard, a Brazilian song or even a cello suite by Bach. For her album The Wise Ones she wrote new songs, but also revisited her own career successes with previous collaborators, including songwriter Alan Hampton and noted jazz innovators such as Robert Glasper, Gerald Clayton and Mark Guiliana.
Gretchen Parlato has earned recognition as one of the best vocalists of her generation. As a student she already performed with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, who were fans from day one. She won prestigious awards and appeared on albums by artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Marcus Miller and Kneebody. She collaborated with famous Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira. And she formed the vocal trio Tillery with Rebecca Martin and Becca Stevens.
‘Parlato goes beyond mere intimacy in her singing, as if we are being invited to share her innermost thoughts… Fearless, spellbinding’ (Jazzwise).
