With Time-Lapse, guitarist and composer Gijs Idema completes his triptych on the transience of time and the experience of music. After the solo album Marking Time (2020) and Shaping Time (2021), with the ADAM Quartet and Anna Serierse, he wrote music for a six-piece ensemble with two guitars and two alto saxophones. Alongside Idema are guitarist Ella Zirina and alto saxophonists Ben van Gelder and Mo van der Does, who also play flute and clarinet. The individual character of these musicians was a major inspiration for Idema’s writing. The pieces range from hushed harmonies to rhythmic outbursts.

Idema moves freely between composition and improvisation. He also leads the Gijs Idema Trio and the Idema/Serierse Quartet with vocalist Anna Serierse. With the quartet he released Motus (2020), Cloud Studies (2022) and Serenade in Blue (2025). Serenade in Blue won an Edison, and Motus had been nominated before. As a sideman he plays in N∆BOU, the William Barrett Band, TheDutchBrewHouse and Nina Rompa’s Hoog, among others.

‘Idema’s guitar gives the music an almost otherworldly atmosphere and adds a unique lightness to every composition he contributes to’ (DownBeat).]

Mo van der Does alto sax/clarinet, Ben van Gelder alto sax/flute, Ella Zirina guitar, Gijs Idema guitar, Cas Jiskoot double bass, Tim Hennekes drums
