Early Show: Sylvie Courvoisier Trio

Sylvie Courvoisier piano, Ned Rothenberg clarinet/bass clarinet/alt sax/shakuhachi, Julian Sartorius drums

Sylvie Courvoisier is known for her energetic piano playing in which she bridges the gap between her classical background and the improv scene in New York, where she lives. For 20 years she has been collaborating regularly with Ned Rothenberg, who has developed a unique style of playing in his own right, on (bass) clarinet, alto sax and shakuhachi. In their improvisations they extend the language of their instrument, operating outside their traditional roles. A highlight in their collaborative oeuvre is their album In Cahoots with violinist Mark Feldman.

During the lockdown period they developed a new program with co-written composed and improvised materials, contributions from each of their catalogues and some of their favorite tunes by others. At the BIMHUIS they will perform with Swiss drummer Julian Sartorius, who has previously played here with Hermine Deurloo, Rembrandt Frerichs and Dimlite. The first album by this trio, Lockdown, will appear on April 4 on the respected label Clean Feed.
