The feeling of being suspended in mid-air: that’s what Bernard van Rossum would like to evoke with his new album Trampoline. The saxophonist and composer is taking a break from his flamenco big band, with spacious music in a compact line-up. Special guest on stage is flamenco dancer and rising star Karen Lugo, with whom the group achieves a symbiosis of sound and movement.
The warm sound of Spain is always near in the music of Bernard van Rossum, since he was born and raised there, as a child of an English mother and a Dutch father. He celebrated success at the BIMHUIS with his BvR Flamenco Big Band. The fluent, challenging rhythms in his new music were inspired by his teenage years playing pop drums.
