For his album Unclassified Affections, drummer Dan Weiss was inspired by his love of reading classic novels. Its title was taken from Virginia Woolf, for example. The album also contains compositions that refer to writers such as Dickens, Melville, and Orwell. Weiss will now perform with the same band as on the album, featuring prominent improvising musicians from New York.
All four members continue to develop new sounds and techniques on their instruments. Dan Weiss has led a variety of bands out of Brooklyn, in which he has explored Indian music, for example. He previously played on our stage with, among others, Lee Konitz. Trumpet player Peter Evans has drawn from his extensive sonic arsenal here in bands featuring the likes of Evan Parker and Craig Taborn. Patricia Brennan is a rising star on vibraphone who has performed at our venue with Mary Halvorson. And Miles Okazaki is a remarkably versatile guitarist whose appearances here include a solo performance of compositions by Thelonious Monk.
‘The closer you listen, the more exquisite detail emerges from the quartet’s interaction… it’s clear that Weiss stands among the most compelling drummer-composers on the contemporary scene’ (JazzTrail).
