Bobo Stenson Trio

Bobo Stenson is one of the great names in European jazz. Over more than fifty years, the Swedish pianist has played with Charles Lloyd, Tomasz Stańko, Don Cherry and Stan Getz, among others, and was a member of the group Rena Rama. In 1974 he recorded the legendary Witchi-Tai-To with the Jan Garbarek Bobo Stenson Quartet, an album that helped lay the foundations of Scandinavian jazz. His lyrical playing, in which Scandinavian and American influences meet, has become an example for an entire generation of Scandinavian pianists.

His trio dates back to the debut album Underwear from 1971, back then with Arild Andersen on bass and Jon Christensen on drums. Anders Jormin joined in the mid-1980s, Jon Fält in 2008. Stenson’s poetic piano playing, Jormin’s folk-inspired bass lines and Fält’s agile drumming come together as an organic whole.

The trio has released eight albums on ECM. The most recent, Sphere, won a Grammis for jazz album of the year in 2024. The award is the Swedish equivalent of the Dutch Edison, and it was already Stenson’s third. He has also received the Gyllene skivan several times, the prize the Swedish jazz magazine Orkesterjournalen awards each year to the best Swedish jazz album.
