Angelika Niescier / Tomeka Reid / Eliza Salem: Beyond Dragons

‘Hic Sunt Dracones’ (here be dragons) is a Latin phrase used on old maps to indicate undiscovered areas. It’s also a track by Beyond Dragons, the trio featuring Angelika Niescier on alto sax, Tomeka Reid on cello and Eliza Salem on drums. Together they explore new ground with every performance, with Niescier’s compositions as points of departure. Sometimes their sound is explosive and sometimes it’s delicate, but it always has the tension of the unknown lying around the corner.

Angelika Niescier is an adventurer on alto saxophone who won important awards in Europe and has close ties with the American improvised music scene. She has previously played our stage as part of her duo with Alexander Hawkins and has collaborated with the likes of Tyshawn Sorey, Kris Davis and Sylvie Courvoisier. With her fluent improvisational style on cello, Tomeka Reid has made name in the Art Ensemble of Chicago. And Eliza Salem is a rising star on drums from New York who collaborated with, among others, pianist Marta Sanchéz.
