Rare Gretsch “Birdland” drum kit donated to BIMHUIS

BIMHUIS has received a rare Gretsch “Birdland” Jazz Club drum kit in its characteristic Cadillac Green finish. The instrument was donated by Boet Kreiken, a passionate amateur drummer and private collector, who wanted to find it a home where it would continue to be played.

The Gretsch “Birdland” refers to an iconic model from the 1950s, developed in collaboration with the legendary New York jazz club. Gretsch drums from that era are known for their warm, direct sound and compact setup, and were played by founding fathers of modern jazz including Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones and Charlie Persip. This is a limited edition produced to mark Gretsch’s 125th anniversary, with only a handful of examples in Europe. The striking Cadillac Green finish with gold hardware makes it an instrument that catches the eye as much as the ear.

Watch this video in which Boet Kreiken and drummer Jimmi Hueting talk about the history of the instrument and the significance of this donation.
