Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio ft. François Moutin, Rudy Royston

Wed 23 March 2022

Indian-American saxophonist celebrates his heroes, from Charlie Parker to Johnny Cash.

Hero Trio is a tribute to the heroes of alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. On his first acoustic trio album he honors legendary saxophone players who excelled in the trio format, such as Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman. He also selected tracks by Charlie Parker, Keith Jarrett, Stevie Wonder, and Johnny Cash. Rudresh will perform in the same line-up as on the album, with François Moutin on double bass and Rudy Royston on drums.

Over the course of his twenty-five-year career Rudresh Mahanthappa’s music making has constantly pushed at the artistic boundaries to encompass such diverse influences as acoustic bebop, electric fusion, and Carnatic music. In many projects he refers to his Indian-American background. For example, he has performed at our venue with classical Indian saxophone player Kadri Gopalnath, and in Indo-Pak Coalition with Pakistani guitarist Rez Abbasi. He also played here with Indian-American pianist Vijay Iyer, his peer in the New York jazz scene.
