M ALBERTO

About M ALBERTO
M ALBERTO was born in Curaçao, currently lives in Amsterdam, and is active on both sides of the ocean as a poet, composer, arranger, saxophonist, and creator of documentary theater and essay performances. They collaborate with “artists, organizers, elders, and activists,” both in the field and on stage. As an artist-researcher, M travels the world to collect untold stories of resistance.
REFLEX
For REFLEX, M ALBERTO takes over the BIMHUIS for HIGH FLYING PARK: a sanctuary where all kinds of art forms converge, with music and poetry at its core. On stage, M will explore new poems and compositions with a three-headed beast voiced by vocalists Shara Lunon, Claron McFadden and M ALBERTO, backed by mallet percussion, saxophone and electronics. Channelling the generative resilience of Curaçao, the DIY spirit of New York counter-culture and the Sisyphean persistence of Amsterdam squatters, through a patchwork of rap, opera, ‘minimal’, chamber music, electronic and Black improvised music.
Offstage M will curate an exhibition with their own work and collaborations. HIGH FLYING PARK is named after a practice of creative rebellious youth in Curaçao, fifty years ago. When, in response to a lack of accessible community space for sharing life and art, the youth built their own colourful, temporary, free spaces on empty, unused lots. These High-Flying Parks are long gone, but their legacy persists.
REFLEX is supported by Ammodo Art & AFK.
