Souljazz by British-Jamaican singer with a distinctively contemporary style. ‘A singer who possesses a pure tone, a convincing storyteller’ (The Jazz Mann).
Zara McFarlane is one of the most remarkable rising stars in British soul jazz. The singer from London, who was raised in a Jamaican family, has been compared to Erykah Badu en Cassandra Wilson. She has a pure voice and a unique, contemporary style combining soul, jazz, dub and afro funk. The intimate vocals of Nina Simone and the enchanting seventies-jazz of Pharoah Sanders are important influences on Zara’s songs. Her most recent album If You Knew Her was released on Brownswood Recordings, the label of DJ Gilles Peterson which features among others Ghostpoet en José James.
‘A singer who possesses a pure tone and who has a real feel for jazz melody and rhythm. Her original songs are sharply observed. McFarlane is a convincing storyteller’ (The Jazz Mann).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
