Zara
McFarlane is one of the most remarkable rising stars in British soul jazz. The
singer, who was born and raised in London, has been compared to Erykah Badu en
Cassandra Wilson. She has a pure voice and a unique, contemporary style
combining soul, jazz, dub and afro funk. The intimate vocals of Nina Simone and
the enchanting seventies-jazz of Pharoah Sanders are important influences on
Zara’s songs. Her second album If You Knew Her will appear in January on Brownswood
Recordings, the label of DJ Gilles Peterson which features among others
Ghostpoet en José James.
‘A singer
who possesses a pure tone and who has a real feel for jazz melody and rhythm.
Her original songs are sharply observed. McFarlane is a convincing storyteller’
(The Jazz Mann).
Afterwards DJ Welmoed at the café.
