In 1913
Stravinsky composed one of the most epoch-making works of the 20^th
century: his ballet Le Sacre du Printemps. The ballet tells the spring ritual of
a pagan tribe, far before civilization. In order to persuade the gods to pass
the winter into the spring, a young virgin is sacrified.

Stravinsky processes this primitive theme in the same
primitive way in his music: he centralizes the rhythm and the dynamics over the
melody. Besides the famous orchestral version Stravinsky also wrote a version
for piano by two pianists. In this version the rhythmic structure of the work
stands out even better.
