In BIMHUIS Productions‘ REFLEX series we invite makers to reflect on the world and contemporary society. For this edition, composer and viola player Yanna Pelser focuses on song as a form. However complex her music may become, it ultimately are simple, packaged melodies that reflect her feelings. For this project, she moves between catchy pop songs, chaotic improvisation, and precisely composed pieces. “A marriage of the music of Joni Mitchell, Hermeto Pascoal, and Arnold Schönberg.” For this occasion, they call on songbirds from various corners of the globe, playing recorders, vibraphones, and modular synthesizers, among other instruments. The band members hail from Norway, Greece, Hungary, and Sweden, but are all seasoned improvisers.

Yanna Pelser unfolds her own intuitive sonic world by combining viola playing and singing. Firmly rooted in classical music, she now expands her horizon by playing with formations ranging from jazz and pop to free improvisation. On our stage she has performed with, among others, North Sea String Quartet and Tijn Wybenga’s Brainteaser Orchestra. She has also collaborated with the likes of Ambrose Akinmusire, Samora Pinderhughes and Asko|Schönberg.

REFLEX is a series of BIMHUIS Productions and is made possible with help of Ammodo Art & AFK.
