Every year a new orchestra: that is the point of departure for XLJAZZ. Amateurs and semi-professionals can apply for auditions six months in advance. After selection and solo practics, the group comes together for a week crammed full of rehearsals. Top soloists are present at the concerts; Benjamin Herman, Eric Vloeimans and many others were guest players in previous shows. This year’s repertoire is dominated by compositions by organiser Joost Dieho. The saxophone player, arranger and musical omnivore will explore the influence of Frank Zappa, Gil Evans, soul, funk and Brazilian styles.
