Wu Wei & Klaas Hekman | Dion Nijland

Wu Wei sheng , Klaas Hekman bass saxophone/shakuhachi

Dion Nijland double bass

The performers in this double concert are a great match. With a limited set of instruments they create a world of sound. By improvising they stretch the boundaries and explore new roads in music. Both solo bassist Dion Nijland and the duo of Wu Wei and Klaas Hekman will present new albums at this concert.

I PLAY ME is a project for solo double bass, conceptualized and performed by Dion Nijland. In nineteen pieces, some improvised and some composed, he shows what musical self-exploration can lead to. How does one play a duet with oneself, for example? Dion Nijland has previously performed on our stage with Talking Cows, Dimami and the bands of Corrie van Binsbergen and Joost Buis.

Both Wu Wei and Klaas Hekman are specialized in extraordinary instruments. Wu Wei is a known performer of the sheng, the three thousand year old Chinese mouth organ. Around the world, composers have written works for him. Klaas Hekman plays bass saxophone and the Japanese flute shakuhachi. Like Wu Wei, he was classically trained. Their album Oostum Wind, which mainly contains improvisations, was acclaimed in the international press.
