Willem Abelen’s FLUX

Willem Abelen tenor sax/soprano sax, Tom Veltien guitar, Michał Niedbała piano, Freek Mulder double bass, Yordi Petit drums

With his lyrical playing and warm tone, saxophonist Willem Abelen is ready to leave the HKU Utrecht Conservatory and share his compositions with the world. For his graduation concert, he presents FLUX. This project reflects on the hyperactive world that we live in. Unexpected changes and free parts are interchanged with carefully composed phrases and surprising grooves. FLUX represents constant change. Sound and structure are continuously in motion.

Willem Abelen is appreciated for his free, unbound style of playing — playful, brash, and often colouring outside the lines. For years he has been active as a sideman, an orchestra player, and a soloist, with the likes of Jong Metropole, Nederlands Studenten Jazz Orkest, and Young Jazz Society. For FLUX he formed a versatile band featuring drummer Yordi Petit, double bassist Freek Mulder, pianist Michał Niedbała, and guitarist Tom Veltien.
