WALLACE RONEY GROUP FEAT. LENNY WHITE & BUSTER WILLIAMS
Wednesday25 March 2015

Exciting, forward-thinking jazz by Wallace Roney, the only trumpet player ever personally mentored by Miles Davis. ‘One of jazz’s thriller-diller instrumentalists’ (Downbeat).

As a teenager he had what every trumpet player strives for: a personal, recognizable voice and astounding technical command. Wallace Roney learned the tricks of the trade from Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie before he became the first and only trumpet player ever mentored by Miles Davis. Every album he has released since then displays a forward-thinking attitude and a fascination with exciting, adventurous music including afro-beat and hip-hop. ‘Miles was the mentor and I was his pupil, we had a father-son relationship’, says Roney in an interview with AD. ‘He knew I was not imitator, but someone who tries to take every aspect of his music one step further.’

Before Wallace Roney started his own band he was part of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Tony Williams Quintet and VSOP with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock en Ron Carter. ‘The trumpeter is one of jazz’s thriller-diller instrumentalists, a guy who plots the trajectory of a solo, takes aim at the nexus of technique and transcendence, and lets it rip’ (Downbeat).
