VOLKOV TRIO & SERGEY STAROSTIN

A wide range of different musicians flock to Saint Petersburg which makes for extraordinary collaborative projects. The pivotal figure is double bass player Vladimir Volkov, who has played with all the renowned Russian jazz musicians. Singer and musicologist Sergey Starostin has been researching Russian and Eastern European musical traditions for years. Aside from clarinet he plays a range of traditional wind instruments. Starostin and the Volkov Trio combine jazz with tundra folk. ‘Volkov plays his double bass with marvellous speed and makes the big box float and chirp.’ (Suddeutsche Zeitung).
