VIVA BRASIL FESTIVAL 2014

While Brazil prepares for the World Cup, Amsterdam is getting ready for Viva Brasil Festival 2014. This international festival of Brazilian jazz, samba and popular Brazilian music (MPB) brings a dazzling programme to a stunning location on the IJ on 18, 19 and 20 July.

This last day of Viva Brasil features Brazilian Bites with Rafels van Rio (show) and performances by Agnes Gosling, ReSamba, Trio Bola Preta, theatre for all ages (3 years+), a classical Brazilian guitar player, The sea of pilgrim Antonio (a film by Mendel Hardeman) & DJs. The foyer of the Muziekgebouw will be Praça Viva Brasil with snacks and a dance floor. Finally Viva Brasil will end with performances of Josee Koning and Tania Maria at the Bimhuis.

JOSEE KONING
Dutch singer Josee Koning made history in the 1980s by being the first to introduce Brazilian music to the Netherlands with her legendary band Batida. This made her the first singer in this country to devote herself entirely to Brazilian music. In 1995 Josee decided to launch a solo career. A meeting with Antonio Carlos Jobim led to her first solo album, Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, produced by Dori Caymmi. This success was followed by many more solo albums, collaborations, concerts and tours with Brazilian artists including Ivan Lins, João Bosco, Nosso Trio, the Who’s the Bossa? project, and Orchestra Jazz Sinfônica from São Paulo. Josee is currently working on a new album.
Besides performing Josee has taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory for over 20 years, inspiring many of her voice students to share her love of Brazilian music.

TANIA MARIA
Singer, songwriter and pianist Tania Maria was born in São Luiz, in Maranhão state. She began playing at the age of 7, later moving to France where she became an international star. Tania’s unique voice and sound brought her huge popular success in the 1970s, and with her tasteful bossa nova, samba and jazz compositions Tania Maria is still a star at the piano. She performs at the world’s biggest jazz festivals and continues to steal the hearts of music lovers everywhere.

Tania has recorded more than 25 albums and in 1985 she was nominated for a Grammy Award in the ‘Best Female Jazz Vocal Performance’ category. One of her biggest hits, Come with me now, is seldom off the radio. Her scatting and virtuoso piano playing promise an unforgettable climax to the Viva Brasil Festival 2014!
