VIJAY IYER QUARTET QUARTET FEAT. RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA

Rudresh Mahanthappa-alto saxophone, Vijay Iyer-piano, Stephan Crump-bass, Marcus Gilmore-drums

The most commanding pianist and composer to emerge in recent years’ (The Village Voice), Vijay Iyer and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, both of Indian origin and both prominent in the New York contemporary jazz scene, have been playing in each other’s groups for several years. Iyer’s music is characterized by extensive, complex patterns that often lead to climaxes like earth quakes and ecstatic eruptions. In all this Mahanthappa sounds like the snake charming Ornette Coleman. ‘Mr. Iyer’s gigs are attaining a newly urgent momentum, with some genuine lyricism offsetting the rhythm attack. He’s a jazz musician of the moment, and now’s the time to hear him.’ (The New York Times).
