Valentina Magaletti: A Queer Anthology of Drums

Valentina Magaletti drums

A solo performance by drummer Valentina Magaletti is quite an event: a rarity, AND exceptionally exciting. Magaletti is a musical storyteller who is held in high regard by musicians. She was one half of the duo Tomaga and can be heard frequently in countless other projects, live and in the studio. During the coronavirus pandemic, Magaletti released her first solo album, A queer anthology of drums (2020), combining drums and percussion with a variety of found sounds, toys and electronics. This immersive sound trip sets the stage for her performance.

Born in Italy and based in London, Magaletti collaborates with musicians in a wide range of genres, from experimental bass player Marlene Ribeiro (GNOD) and producer Nicolas Jaar, to guitarist Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), singer-songwriter Bat for Lashes, and percussion legend Han Bennink. The constant factor in her playing is its enormous expressiveness. With limited means, Magaletti achieves great effects, although she also shows her virtuoso side when needed. You can be sure of one thing: every blow hits the mark.
