URI CAINE TRIO FEAT. MARK HELIAS & CLARENCE PENN
Uri Caine piano, Mark Helias bas, Clarence Penn drums
Pianist Uri Caine, a leading figure of the New York downtown scene who’s known for many stylistic experiments, goes back to basics with his piano trio.
When Uri Caine performs in the well-tested format of the piano trio you can expect something special. As a pianist, keyboard player and composer he’s one of the greats of the colorful New York downtown scene. Much like his kindred spirit John Zorn he knows how to unite fundamentally different styles, from klezmer to electric funk and from B-movie soundtracks to classical works by Bach and Beethoven. At the Bimhuis he will perform with his acoustic trio, with double bassist Mark Helias and drummer Clarence Penn.
‘Caine’s solo and ensemble albums have re-imagined the music of Bach, Mozart, Mahler and Verdi, toyed with more conventional jazz repertoire and realised his own pieces. Unifying his work has been an unusual ability to make his love of the zany cohabit with an almost painful beauty’ (The Sydney Morning Herald).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
