Ernst Glerum is an undisputed master of his instrument with a universally acclaimed tone and who displays all the virtues of the improvising jazz musician in a unique and special fashion. One who serves as a model and a source of inspiration for further cross-fertilization and mutual nourishment, contributing to the exploration of new musical terrain.’ Two quotes from the jury report about the bassist and composer Ernst Glerum winner of the 2009 VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious award for jazz and improvised music in the Netherlands. Glerum put together a gala programme for the occasion which includes: Omnibus Glerum, ICP Orchestra, Trio Bennink/Borstlap/Glerum, Trio Janssen/Glerum/Janssen, Transatlantic Issues, Benjamin Herman Quartet. Exposition in the Bimhuiscafé (Monday 11 t/m Sunday 31 May): ‘Give me a break – illustrations from a lost and found music culture’ by Stefan Glerum. Projection in the Atrium (Monday 11 May, from 15.00hrs): the film ‘Haven’ (based on the tv-series ‘Stad Aan De Haven’ (Port Town) by Annegien Haselager and Nikki Boomkens for RTV-NH, 2008). Ernst Glerum composed the film score for the Amsterdam Bass Symphony Orchestra (forty basses and solo piano). Projection in the Atrium is sponsored by BeamSystems.
