UGLY BEAUTY THE MUSIC OF THELONIOUS MONK

Benjamin Herman-alto saxophone, Robert Jan Vermeulen-piano, Frans van der Hoeven-double bass, Han Bennink-drums

Sometimes, a certain roughness and akwardness speaks louder than superficial elegance. Ugly Beauty (a Thelonious Monk composition) is the title that Robert Jan Vermeulen gave to his Monk program. A few years ago he was so touched by Monk’s solo performance of ‘I Should Care’ that he decided to go deeply into the subject of his music. With Benjamin Herman, Frans van der Hoeven and Han Bennink he gathered a select group of musicians to transpose his Monk fascination into a sound of his own. The repertoire consists of (among other pieces) San Francisco Holiday, Four in One, Off Minor and of course Ugly Beauty.
