TUTU PUOANE & TINEKE POSTMA
IN JONI’S WORLD
AFTERWARDS DJ WELMOED AT THE CAFE
Tutu Puoane zang, Tineke Postma alt-/sopraansax, Ewout Pierreux piano, Clemens van der Feen bas, Jasper Van Hulten drums
Singer Tutu Puoane revisits the songs of her hero Joni Mitchell, together with saxophonist Tineke Postma (Buma Boy Edgar Prijs) and an excellent Dutch/Belgian jazz group.
Joni Mitchell is an absolute favorite of Belgian jazz singer Tutu Puoane. Tutu doesn’t merely cover Joni’s songs, she makes them her own by adding her own unique timbre and phrasing. The result is a highly intuitive musical journey through an intensely beautiful repertoire. Big Yellow Taxi, Hejira, Both Sides Now and many more, sung and played in a recognizable way but like you haven’t heard them before. A one-off concert with Joni’s songs at TivoliVredenburg led to this collaboration with saxophonist Tineke Postma, who recently won the prestigious Buma Boy Edgar Prize.
Jazz vocalist Tutu Puoane was born in South Africa and since 2005 she settled in Belgium, where she achieved success with solo albums full of jazz, soul and gospel and performing with such artists as Toots Thielemans and Brussels Jazz Orchestra. ‘Simply stunning’ (Cape Times).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
