THE ART OF DUO II: TOUMANI DIABATÉ & KAYHAN KALHOR

CONCERT WITHOUT INTERMISSION

TICKETS

An encounter between two masterful string players at Morgenland Festival Amsterdam: Grammy winner Toumani Diabaté from Mali and Kayhan Kahlor from Iran, renowned performer of Persian classical music.

Both of these musicians have performed at the Bimhuis before, but this is their very first appearance together on stage: Iranian kamançhe-virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabaté, the undisputable kora master from Mali. Morgenland Festival Osnabrück has brought them together. Now they will perform a rare concert at Morgenland Festival Amsterdam, fusing the sounds of kamançhe and kora.

Kayhan Kalhor has performed with Persian singers Mohammad-Reza Shajarian and Shahram Nazeri, and became passionate about musical exchange with other cultures. He reached an international audience through collaboration with, among others, Yo-Yo Ma, New York Philharmonic Orchestra and film director Francis Ford Coppola. At Morgenland Festival Osnabrück he has performed with Alim Qasimov.

Toumani Diabaté is one of the most influential African musicians, an internationally renowned master of the kora, the 21-stringed African harp. He claims his heritage as a griot goes back 70 generations. Griots are the keepers of history, literature and music in their cultures. The art is passed on from generation to generation. In recent years Toumani has shared the stage with his son Sidiki. Like Kalhor he is passionate about musical exchange. His collaborations include singer Björk, flamenco group Ketama and singer/guitarist Ali Farka Touré.

After it’s succesful pilot edition last summer, Morgenland Amsterdam continues to provide a platform for experiment, complexity, nuance, dialogue and development.
