TOON ROOS

‘FIFTY/FIFTY ACOUSTIC & ELECTRIC CELEBRATION CONCERT’
TOON’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Toon Roos saxen, Karel Boehlee toetsen, Martijn van Iterson gitaar, Frans van Geest, Theo de Jong bas, Joost van Schaik drums

Internationally renowned Dutch saxophonist, who has collaborated with Steely Dan and Joe Zawinul, now celebrates the 50th year of his birth with lyrical acoustic jazz and electric funk/jazz.

Saxophonist Toon Roos has earned international praise for his lyrical playing and his strong personality as a band leader and composer. He has collaborated with famous musicians such as Joe Zawinul and Steely Dan, and has performed at the Bimhuis with legendary Weather Report drummer Peter Erskine. Toon celebrates the 50th year of his birth with a festive acoustic/electric double concert performed by his quartet and the Toon Roos Group. The concert opens with an acoustic set of standards and classics, followed by a funk-infused set of mostly original compositions.

Toon Roos’ music alternates power and dynamism with romanticism and quietness. For more than 30 years Toon and keyboard player Karel Boehlee have displayed their strong chemistry full of interaction and musical adventure, described by critic Ken Vos as ‘a nearly telepathic contact’. Drummer Joost van Schaik is their regular partner and the driving force behind both the acoustic and the electric band. Toon, Karel and Joost performed with bassist Hein van der Geyn on Toon’s CD Love Revisited. Together with Joost, bassist Theo de Jong is a new addition to the Toon Roos Group. With his groove, lyricism and virtuosity he takes the group to new heights.

International critics unanimously praised Toon’s most recent album Angel Dance. Renowned American critic Scott Yanow wrote: ‘Roos is excellent throughout… all ten compositions come from the band and many are worthy of becoming standards in the future.’ Angela Ballhorn of Jazzthethik: ‘The quartet plays music of great beauty, the title Angel Dance covers the music really well.’ Peter Erskine: ‘One of the few saxophone players in the world with a sound of their own’.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
